These are the last two projects that I need to do to have my recently purchased 87 300E back in tip top shape again.

I seem to get no cool air from the air conditioner and the heater works fine. I plan to start trouble shooting the AC tomorrow. Can anyone tell me where I might begin and what to look for as to finding out what is not working properly?

Also the head rests of the front seat will only rise when using the electric controls. I must push them down manually. It seems something is broken or not connected in the back section of the front seats.

Is there as special way to insert the head rest rods or must I take the back panels off the front seats to fix the problem? If so what will I find in there that is not working properly?

Headrests: Remove the seat back and replace the plastic gearing.

AC: Look for anything wet/oily that has attracked dirt. Condensor, drier, expansion valve, hoses and compressor. Don't confuse power steering pump leakage with a compressor leaking. (It drips down)

Thanks MM. The system had no pressure in it. So I converted it to the alternative refrigerant. At first the system would not hold any pressure but while I was pumping high pressure into the system something sealed in the compressor. I then tried to pump a vacume but whatever had sealed broke lose again. So I opened the high side and put a gas of refrigerant into the low side to purge the system of air. Then I added more refrigerant and oil and the system sealed again.

Now I have cold air.

Any idea what sealed?

on the back paneling of the seat there is a little button, when removing them, just push the button and pull up a little and the headrest will come out.

It might be possible that the headrests have been taken out before (like described above) and haven't been pushed back. The pins of the headrests have to be clamped into the plastic gearing and as long as they go up perfectly, I doubt that the gearing is worn. Figure out whether the headrests are clamped in the plastic gearing (they go up because they rest on the plastic gearing but won't come down because the plastic gearing doesn't hold the headrest pins.

Makes sense to me MBenz. Can I reconnect the pins without taking the back off the seats?

I don't know...the high-quality plastic system that is engineered by the MB people is very delicate (and expensive to renew). Personally I always prefer to see what I am doing and therefore take off the rear panel.
The power system for adjusting the headrests is just simple, easy to crack plastic and as soon as one little plastic part is broken, you need to buy the complete system to get the headrest going again.
