What model year? Depending on the year 14 digits may be the correct number. If it's anything but 17 digits you simply can't run it on Carfax. If it is old enough the MB classic center may be of some help, but not for a Carfax like title check.

You should eliminate one of these threads, probably the other one. A 1978 would have a 14 digit VIN. You can't run it anywhere except with MB or MB classic center.

14 digit is the old format. Here is what they mean.
First 3 are chassis # Next 3 are model # Seventh digit is 1 for LHD, 2 for RHD Eighth digit is 0 for standard trans/ 2 for auto next 6 digits are serial# Example: 113.043-10-000213 .... is a 1967 250SL/ LHDwith a standard trans.. it was the 213th one made ...and it's mine.
