Manually shutting trunk?
 

Manually shuting trunk? How do I do it, I see posts about 2 levers under the trunk lid? I dont see them anywhere, and I cant shut my trunk.

Please help.

someones got to know how to manually shut the trunk. Please help me out I need to shut my trunk theres a bunch of thugs and criminals where I park my car I cant afford to worry 2 days in a row about my trunk opening up or someone getting into it.

To manually shut your trunk, place your hand on the trunk and push it down. :)

It will lock when you lock the doors. If you want to lock it with the key so that it will not open when the doors are opened, then insert the key in the trunk lock and turn it until the key hole is 90° of the position it is in now. I think that may be the horizontal position that locks it. if you've got the owner's manual, that will tell you for sure.

Hmmm I did that. But the inside latch doesnt close to lock the trunk. I push down the trunk and nothing happens. Then try to turn the key to the lock position still nothing. If I manually push the trunk latch down I can hear the pump working. Only problem is I cant push that lock down after the trunk is down.

I heard theres 2 latches under the trunk or something to manually lock it.

Because the key will not lock the trunk. And me simply pushing the trunk down doesnt lock it.


So what do I do?

I'm about to leave work within an hour or so, anyone have an idea of shutting my trunk so when on the freeway it doesnt fly up and cause an accident or anything worse?

I've attached a section of the page from the owner's manual detailing how to close the lid manually.

Here's the deal - the switches are under the lid of the trunk - open the lid, stick your head in so you can see the underneath of the lid and look up.

There are two switches, one that allows you to retract the pulldown pawl (the pin that actually engages the lock mechanism), the other allows you to retract the handle.

Retracting the pulldown pawl only allows you to correct a trunk that will LATCH, but not pull down flush and tight. If your trunk won't latch, possibly the latching mechanism, which is in the "sill" portion of the trunk opening is malfunctioning.

The latch itself is a "C" shaped "arm", which rotates towards the front of the car when the pawl contacts the arm. As the trunk is closed, the pawl presses into the base of the "C", and the latch rotates forward about 90 degrees until it latches into place. The "C" catches the loop in the pawl, and that's what holds the trunk closed.

Once the trunk "latches", a signal is sent to the closing assist pump, which retracts the pawl into the lid, pulling the trunk flush.

If your lid won't latch at all, check the latch mechanism.

If you can't see the "C" looking up at you, try pressing on the latch release (the whole key cylinder in the trunk is the latch release) - if the latch is set properly, you should feel some resistance as the key cylinder presses against the latch release. If not, put the key in the cylinder and rotate towards the unlock position, then back to vertical and remove the key. Try it again - the latch mechanism should pop open. If it doesn't try moving it with your finger to see if it will rotate open. If it still doesn't work - something's broke.

If you can see the "C" looking up at you, try pressing down on it to rotate it forward and see if it catches closed. There should be a very positive "click" once the latch rotates about 90 degrees towards the front of the car. If it won't catch, then the latch is ver-broken.

You can also test the closing mechanism by switching off the trunk lights. If you look inside the trunk on the sill, behind the latch, you should see a yellow rectangular socket. Rotate the socket upwards until it clicks into place horizontally. (You may need to use a car key to do this.) When you do this, the trunk lights will go out, the trunk handle will retract and the pawl will be pulled in. Press the socket the other direction and everything should go back to where it was before. As the pawl is extended you should hear an audible click when it reaches full travel.

Are you talking trunk or hood? The photo shows the hood up and also I never heard of a trunk flying up causing an accident.

Ok well the problem is fixed for now. What happend was very rare, not only did my power assist or auto assisting closing of the trunk stop working but the reason why I couldnt shut my trunk was because the trunk latch itself droped down a little lower and wouldnt catch.

So I took it to my mechanic and within 2 mins he was able to raise the latch up a little higher and tighten it up. Shuts fine manually now.

But my door locks still dont work by the key.

So I will check that out on thursday.
