I bought a used 1986 300 E which had the air bag blown. I replaced the air
bag and thought all was well. Recently I relamped the dash lights and found
the SRS light burned out. With new lamps in the dash the SRS light will not
go out. Any ideas where to look? Where are the crash triggers located? Seatbelts affect this light?
Can I use a DVM to trouble shoot this circuit without triggering the new
bag?

There are no self-diagnostics with that early model. The system is tester by a special tester.

The crash profile module always had to be replaced when the airbag was deployed on that model. So it is most likely it still needs replacing.

The SRS systen on cars thru 1987 have 2 voltage supply control units that power the system. One of these units that has a 2 pin connector seems to fail most of the time. On these cars the CRASH sensor(computer) doesn't require replacement when the air bag is deployed like the 1988 & later cars. Only a complete test with test adaptor will tell what the problem actually is.
