Hi All:

I need help finding the filler hole for the rear differential to add more gear oil. I am starting to hear a slight pinging and chattering noises back there.

I would appreciate any responses to help me find the filler hole and what tools would be needed to get to it.

Aloha,
Eric

You should need a 14mm hex drive to remove/tighten the filler and drain plugs. The drain should be located on the bottom of the diff housing and the fill should be a little over half way up on one of the side of the housing, probably the rear face. With a funnel and a milk jug you should be able to drain the gear oil without making a mess. It should take about 2 quarts of gear oil to refill. Be sure to remove the fill plug before attempting to drain, just in case the fill plug is frozen in place (you need to be able to refill ;)).

You should be changing the gear oil every 30 or 50K. If you've never changed it, or have no record of it being changed, now is a great time to do so.

Mike, Good advice on changing it if you don't know.

I had my mechanic change my differential fluid and all other fluids, not only for summer prep, but as long as he was rebuilding the tranny, I figured the extra expense while he was in there doing the tranny was worth it. Now I have a starting place. to keep track :)

Thank You

Hi Mike:

Thank you for the advice. I have no records so I will do a full drain and replacement of gear oil. I also need to go out and purchase a 14mm hex wrench.

Thank you once again for the advice.

Aloha,
Eric
