190E Engine mount keeps failing
Hi,
I have a 1985/1986 190E, with the 2.0 M102 (this is identical to a 2.3 but with different bore or stroke). About 18 months ago, the exhaust-side engine mount failed, I believe because the power steering pipes were leaking onto it (this is a right hand drive car so that can happen!). The car vibrated badly on acceleration. We replaced the mount with a genuine Mercedes part, and replaced the pipes. The power steering no longer loses its fluid so it's not leaking any more. All was fine and smooth for 2 months, but then that new engine mount started rattling and clattering loudly at idle (the bolt that goes through it had come out) and the whole car was vibrating on acceleration again. The rattling was from inside of the mount. So we replaced that one with another genuine one (free replacement from Mercedes), which lasted a bit longer but failed again, unbelievably. It rattles if you go over a bump, and the whole car vibrates really badly when you accelerate. What could be causing this? My dad tried to claim it is my driving style, but he is talking crap quite frankly. He suggested we fit the one from a 2.3-16 (which is the same as from a 300E) - something to do with it being tougher. But would this work? Is it the right size? Would it affect the vibration damping properties because it's for a different weight of engine? I don't think it's a good idea but I have no ideas for why the standard mounts keep falling apart. The car is awful to drive when it vibrates like that so it is just sitting unused Russ

Could the condition of the unchanged motor mount be affecting the new one,,, accelerating it's failure?
Aren't motor mounts one of those jobs where you're supposed to replace both sides at the same time? Just thinking out loud,, I have no idea. |

Intake Or Exhaust Side Motormount?
Also check to see if the part # is different from the left and right side. I believe that they made a change where one side was stronger than the other. If you are replacing the exhaust side with a intake side one which is weaker than the exhaust side then you would have the problems you are stating!!

In addition to the above info, I'm thinking that the other mount is bad and is over-stressing the new one. I'd replace both at the same time.
My 1965 Mustang lost both mounts about 4 months apart. Michael

OK just got round to check for replies.. thanks for that I'll have the other mounts checked, but i'm pretty sure they've all been checked when that mount failed again. If I can't fix this I'll just have to get rid of the car, as I can't really afford buying engine mounts left right and centre with the *hope* of maybe fixing it!

Condition of the opposing engine mount will have negligible effect on the one you replaced. As mentioned earlier, check the tranny mount to see if it is causing the motor mount to be off-axis. If this were the case, though, usually the other engine mount will also fail. It could just be a case of bad quality parts. Yes, even OEM are subject to that plague, which is why I tend to buy aftermarket. My aftermarket mount on my 300E is ready for replacement again, but it lasted me about 35K. This will soon be resolved with another $30 on eBay and 30 minutes of my time.
