Help! Car starts then dies- 1996 E320

Hello Everyone,

I have been searching through endless posts to find a resolution. I have a 1996 E320 with the M104 engine. I am havine an intermittent problem where the car starts, then dies- it will do this repeatedly for 5-10 minutes then start. Temperature doesnt seem to affect it. I have had the battery replaced, still does it- This is not every day. I had luck the past 2 days, and then all of a sudden, this morning it acted up. Called AAA, then all of a sudden, she started fine and drove well. I checked the Mass Air Meter, and not sure if thats the culprit. No check engine lights on at all-

I am thinking-
1.) Mass Air Flow Meter
2.) Crank Position Sensor

Any other ideas? I'm stumpped!

Doesn't the '96 have OBDII? You should have scanned it for codes...even if it did not throw a CEL it doesn't mean there is not a stored code that could have given you a clue as to what is wrong. I would think if it was the MAF it would have thrown a CEL, so I would strongly suspect that part was not the problem, but you might still see if you can scan it (autozone will loan you a scanner free) and see if there are any stored codes.

I never would throw a $250+ part at a problem unless I was 90%+ sure that would fix it...I'd sooner pay the dealer an hour's diagnostic time to actually find what's wrong before replacing an expensive part and not fixing it...

Could be a failing key, try a different one. If not the key, I would say a failing CPS. My 2 cents.
