1999 C280 - Would not start?

I have a 1999 C280 Sport with just over 100,000 KMS on the clock. Last night I was out for a short drive, maybe 20 mins. I stopped to run into a store and when I came back she wouldn't start. I tried cranking her over 3 or 4 times and she would just turn for a few seconds but not start. After 3 or 4 tries she stopped turning all together (like a dead battery) but all of my electrical (radio, windows, lights) were still working. I ended up getting a boost from CAA. Drove home turned the car off 3 times and restarted fine.

Does this sound like the battery needs replacing? Should the dash light come on to tell you there is a problem with the battery? I bought the car used and the battery looks to be original. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

further diagnosis...

I started the car, drive 15 mins to the gym, shut off went inside for about and hour. Came out she started no problem. Drove 15 mins to the grocery store, ran in for 15 mins came out and she would NOT start. Tried 3 times, not luck...she just cycled but would not turn over. Batterty didn't die this time. I waited about 10 mins tried again this time she started.

Could this be related to the key or security system? If the key is faulty, would I still be able to turn it?

I didn't get a check engine light and the problem is intermittent. Is there any way to check for sure without going to the dealer?

CPS does not trip the CEL, unfortunately. It sounds exactly like the M112 CPS problem, and self diagnosis is hard. Usually, installing a new one is how you find out DIY...

Yes, sounds like crankshaft position sensor. If the problem is the same as with my 2000 C280, your next symptom will be SSS, sudden stall syndrome where your car will just randomly turn off. Check with the dealer for the cost of the repair, then go to Fastlane and buy the part. You'll need a tool not in your average garage, IIRC an E8 torx socket, DIY and figure all the money you saved!

I dropped by my local MD dealer and picked up a CPS ($176 CAD). Install was a bit more difficult then expected...there wasn't much room to swing the wrench back there. So far, I'm happy to report that it seems to have fixed the problem. Went out on two short drives tonight...had no problems starting the car. Thanks for all of your feedback!
