Question Checking Lifters w/Dead Engine

My '87 300TD T engine is in non-running condition. Is there a method I can use to check the lifters while the engine is resting in 30 degree +/- weather? I suspect lifter(s) on 4th or 5th cyl. Clattered noticeably above 1,500 +/- rpms especially with uphill load.
Thanks & Happy Holidays
Steve
