190E 2.6 head gasket costs

I'm looking at a 1993 190E with a leak from the front. It appears the front gasket is leaking. It could also quite easily be the head gasket leaking from the front. I assume that once the head is off the valve job ought to be done as well. Motor has 136K on it. What should I be looking for as far as determining how the leak is doing? What would tell me if its leaking internally as well as externally? Also, what would this cost to have done? And how much for me to do it myself? One more thing, is there more I to be looking for regarding this?
Thanks,
Jason

I've been reading all the threads that come up in searches. I think I have a good handle on it. Also the DIY with photos for the front cover was very helpful. I'm buying the car I think and will be putting it in the care of Prof. Enrique this week. I love the car. It's a 1993 LE and really has potential. Kind of a checkered past but still looks good.
Thanks,
Jason
