600SEL 1992 Buy. Plz Advice me
Because the S600 1999 and 1998 were so expensive, I'm thinking now to get and excellent 600SEL 1992. The car is in a rare condition.
My question is: If I buy the car and when I face problems in the engine, can I swap the engine with one S600 (1996~1999) W140? And do I need to change the transmission as well? Do I need also to change the EZL units? I asked you in this forum about that 600SEL 1992 car but you didn't encourage me. No I feel that I want to buy it. It's for about 5000$. |
The transmission is different, most of the engine electronics are different, the 600 is unique. Is it doable, yes do you have suficcient funds probably not. Many of the computer parts marry and are not re-setable.

1992 600sel
I must say, this is an amazing automobile! Please be advised that this is a vehicle that requires above-average maintenance and care. If you have a passion and DIY knowledge, i would go for it. There is nothing like cruising in a 600 and having everyone notice you...

Ok, let me ask the question in a different way.
What do I need to change (in addition to the transmission) if I want to install an S600 (1996~1999) engine? |
Shall I go for it?
|
Okay, I'll bite. WHY are you wishing to install an engine and trans from a 1996-99 into a 1992? Just drive the 1992 as is. There are no significant driveline differences, well, not enough to justify all the cost in doing the swap.

Simply because it's reliable.

I have a friend who worked at the local dealership. He hated the V12's. As far as he was concerned , he could never make money working on these cars as they are so complicated everything just took forever.

Take the easy way out-
Well, why dont you be like everyone else....
Buy a damn S320, change the badges, black out the windows, and install a chrome grill... and Voila! You have the most reliable S600 anywhere. The damn 600's are a nuisance! Why are you looking for financial trouble???? However, I would invest in a low mileage 1992 600SEL if it was MINT** and i didnt plan on driving it every day. Maybe just a Sunday car..... My 2cents- |

If you knew half as much as you think, you would know that the S320 is an Inline 6, not a V6..... Have fun in the 600! I'll look for you on the shoulder of the highway.... |

Yes, the S 600 is more powerful than the 500, BUT the engine is substantially heavier, giving the 600 a considerable more heavy nose feel and not even an impressive difference between 0-60 times. The best car magazines (like Car -England- and Auto Motor und Sport -Germany-) always commented on what a waste of money the S 600 was compared to the 500. ONLY on extremely high speed driving situations (above 120 m.p.h.) the 600 would really out perform the 500, everywhere else the 500 will be right up to 600. How many over 120 m.p.h. situtations do you encounter on your everyday driving in the States??? Finally, everyone knows the S 600 is a mess and expensive to maintain (the engine is too large for the engine bay: making access to ANY component a headache). The S 600 was great yes, as a top of the line symbol, and as an over the top toy for arab kings, Hong Kong millionares and U.S. rap singers. The S 500 is what really a great and reliable Mercedes-Benz top-of-the-line car should be. So, get an S 500 and forget about the mess of fitting late production engines to early production bodies. |
