Replaced Oxygen Sensor, Light Still On!
My 1984 190E with the 2.3 engine is now on the road! It had several lamps out on the instrument cluster, so I pulled it out and replaced them. The O2 light was MISSING, so I replaced it, along with the others. Now it burns steady. I bought and installed a new O2 sensor. While I did it, I disconnected the neg battery terminal. Well, I reconnected everything, and the light is still on. Any reset info that I am not getting?
Also, the car wants to idle really slowly, and tries to die when I put it in gear (automatic) Other than this, it is doing very well. Thanks for reading this! Bruce |

pulling the bulb is the way to turn it off, the relay does have a rest button on top, but usually never works. if you want to try to reset it, it is under the passenger foot rest area |

Thanks for the tip! I ran the car on a mountain road this afternoon. No traffic. It pulls pretty good for a 4 cylinder. The more I drive it, the better I like it. Bruce |
ON that year & model the BULB was designed to be removed at 60K miles.
At that service the sensor was to be replaced as a service item! The speedo has a 1 time device to turn that lamp on! |
So, I just basically wasted $70 on a universal O2 sensor! D**n It!
Thanks for the heads-up. I thought I was doing the right thing. I believed the owners manual. I could have wasted the $70 on other things that this car needs!!! Bruce |
As DOC said, the fix was to pull the bulb from the instrument cluster socket. I suppose an alternative would be to put black electrical tape over the sensor light window on the right side of the cluster.
That system, using the odometer to trip a switch, was used through 1986. The W201 service manual would have indicated that. I believe that the 1987 and newer models went to the reset light via the relay located under the front passenger seat carpet. |
Thanks for the replies on this. I should have asked here FIRST before I replaced the sensor anyway. On my American cars, theres never been an issue like this that I recall.
I get to pull the cluster again anyway. Besides pulling the bulb out, I get to clean the insides of the cluster, and see what is broken on the speedo section that drives the odometer. With a little luck (!) something has just popped out of place! I'm looking into getting a service manual. HOWEVER, all I have found is a CD-ROM of the manual. Id really rather have something on paper, but if I have to, I will get the ROM version. Thanks for the help. This is all a learning experience for me. Bruce :freak: |
i don't think it was a waste of money replacing the 02 sensor..you are good for another 60-80k miles..

I guess it isn't a waste of money... I guess it will help the thing run better...
I went ahead and bought the CD ROM from one of this sites sponsors today. I cant wait to get it. Bruce |
