Your precious lungs will be purified when you get a new electro-static dust, cabin filter. You do have one, and I believe that yours is inside and behind the glove box... accessed via the glovebox. Try a search, there has been some discussion on this. You might even be able to put a charcoal filter in there instead.

I'm fairly certain no W124s had such a filter. Not even the 500Es!

on my '95 E320. There is a post with pictures somewhere in here. It is a pretty aggrevating job but it can be done by a diy'er. It is underneath the windshield wiper area.

Engatwork is correct, the filters (pair) are under the drivers side of air intake(plastic grill). This is under hood next to the w/s wiper system

OK, I was 1/2 right. I knew that it had one, but assumed it was behind the glovebox, probably because that's where it is on the current E-class.

Also, this company has replacement filters that are upgraded from particle/dust only to particle with activated charcoal as well. they are the only dual type filter I have seen that is like the new models. I don't know how well they work, never tried them as my car has zero filters.

I also have a 94 E420 and would like to change the cabin filter. By lifting one of the grates next to the wiper, I can see a bit of the filter and can see it is in desperate need of replacement.

The thread link that JCE posted mentioned that the webmaster of this site would post the instructions on how to change these. Since the 124 CDs do not have the instructions, I would love to see it in the DIY section.

JCE, how do I go about ordering the Lycon filter? There does not seem to be a way to order them from that web site.

Again, I have never used these devices, and can't say anything for or against the quality or suitability of the product for use in the cars. I like the idea of adding extra filtering capacity for a wider range of pollutants (as done in current MBs). However, I would want to see some data showing that air flow had not been restricted over OEM filters, and some info showing the size particles and filtration efficiency of the particulate material, and adsorbtion/absorbtion efficiencies for various organics of the charcoal filters to see if they were really an improvement. Good luck, and let us know how it works if you proceed.

At this point I'd be happy just to find some directions on how to change them. :)

Ok we get the picture! How much for the filter(s)and how do you replace it? Should we take it to a mechanic due to it's inaccessability?

The filters run about $50 for the pair at the dealership. Bill Wood (the Webmaster) sent me all of the pictures for the job. I will be doing it within the next couple of days and I'll write it up for the DIY section.

Thanks to the pictures that Bill Wood sent me, I was able to complete the cabin filter change. This is definately a DIY.

I will write up the job and have him post it. In the meantime, I'll go ahead and temporarily post the pictures on my site. I'll let you know when they are up.
