Merc trans 722 series is it from Torqueflite 727
I talked to a tranny tech once and on the subject of Merc tranny.
Our old ones goes by 722 as in most 123 diesel , 116 and 126. So is it a distant cousin of the 727? There're only handful of tranny makers, IE Turbohydramatic by GM, they even powered the RR it got to be reliable. Torqueflite by Chrysler. Ford's whatever they name them. Allison is it owned by GM too for their big trucks. Europe has ZF, Borg Warner. Any input will be appreciated. |
i believe benz makes their own.
when they built their first, they used the fifties gm turbo hydormatic as a guide though and the earlier benz trannies are very similar to it in their action. ..but built on a lighter weight. i uesd to have some early fifties caddies and i always thought that the benz automaitc acted a lot like the caddy trans and a few years ago i read a story in, i think, the star magazine that that is what they copied. well copied might be too strong. the gm tranny was extremely robust. in the sixties and seventies they ran them on dragsters beefed up by b and m....behind blown chrysler hemis and such. tom w |
Have a friend who is retired GM trans specialist
Orville works in our transportation department as an aide. I believe he is 82 and very sprightly. Last year one time he came to me, when I was waiting by my car. Jim, he said, mind if I slide under that Mercedes and look at that transmission. I said, have at Orville, tell me what you think. Well, a few minutes later he come out from under that W123, with a big grin on his face. He said. "man I haven't seen one of those Slim Jims in many Years." "I think I rebuilt 7500 of them working for a big Pontiac shop in Indy". But he said it looked identical to the Slim Jims. Well, I remember them also. In their day, from 59 to to 1965, they were not considered the greatest GM automatic. They were smoother then the Dual Drive early 4 speeds, but not nearly as robust as the later TurboHydramatics. I suspect Benz bought all the tooling for the Slim Jims, as Rolls Royce bought all the tooling for the Dual Drive Hydramatics.

I don’t think Mercedes ever used a GM automatic transmission in any models. A Borg Warner transmission was used until the 60s. In 1959 MB built there first in house automatic transmission with a fluid coupling, the transmission industry called it, 16 bolt pan MB. The aluminum fluid coupling would crack and leak from the bell housing.
From 1968 to 1983, 722.0, 1 and 2 (4bolt pan) 3 and 4 speed model transmissions were used. In 1981 722.3 (W4A040) and 722.4(W4A020) (6bolt pan) transmissions were introduced. The 722.4 is a smaller version of the 722.3 transmission, just like a 904 Chrysler transmission is a smaller version of the 727 Chrysler transmissions, and were never used in any MB. |
All MB auto transmissions for passenger cars are made by MERCEDES BENZ. They share no relation with any other transmissions, except that they are automatic!

GM Transmissions
PLEASE! I get sick at the thought of a GM trans in a Benz. Believe me, the GM Hydromatics are AWFUL!!!! Volvo has used them for years in the S80 and some early model XC90's. Needless to say, Volvo replaced a lot of trannies under warranty for failure. The reason? The GM hydromatics could not take the torque of the Volvo turbo engines. What a mess! (Work For Volvo Myself, thats how i know... But do i dare drive one?????). We now use Japanese transmissions from Yamaha, a much more reliable and smoothe transmission...
Mercedes Benz supplies/ builds their own transmissions. The do not borrow/ share with other manufacturers, other than Chrysler. P.S. Has anyone taken notice that Mercedes' new 3.5L V6 engine has been fitted on not only the majority of the Mercedes Line-Up but on the Chrysler and Dodge Family? A co-worker has a "Dodge Charger 3.5L". I opened the hood to find a very small STAR mark on the lower right rear Cam Cover.... P.S.2 All modern Volvo 3.2L 6-Cylinder engines are stamped FoMoCo.... And they are sharded with the Land Rover LR2.... |

Exactly!
You said it M.B. Doc! Oh how so many people think they know about the Silver Star, but they really don't....

5 speed automatic
hey Doc, are you familiar with the 5 speed auto tiptronic trans for a 94 S320 W140 chassis?

The Mercedes-Benz 300 limo had a Borg Warner transmission.
