M103 stuck fan clutch bolt
Minus removing the radiator to get a small impact gun in there, is there a way I can jam the large idler pulley the fan clutch rides on so I can remove the dead clutch?

There's a special too to hold it. Tool is quite inexpensive.

The tool is about $17 from Performance Parts and there is a stubby Stahlwille 5mm allen (~$7) that you should purchase along with it if you don't have a set of stubby allens.
I just used these tools yesterday and wouldn't have gotten the clutch off without them. On my 1991 300CE, you use the tool from the 3 o'clock position. You are searching for one of two holes in the back of the fan clutch pulley to insert the tool. glenmore 1991 300CE 2000 C280 1990 LS400 |

You can make the holding tool from any 6mm rod. I made mine from an old barbecue fork, works fine. On my 300SE (126) there is very little room in front of the fan. I welded the shortest 8mm 1/2" Allen to a strong metal strip to avoid damaging the radiator.

I take it the holes in the rear of the fan clutch pulley are difficult to see?
Anyone have a part number on that long rod tool?

They are hard to see, and there are only two of them around the fan pulley. I find that it helps to set a small flashlight just behind the front engine hoist eye and shine it down on the back of the pulley, that usually illuminates the right spot on the engine. Then rotate the pulley with a wrench and the short allen socket until the holes line up, put in the special tool to hold the pulley, and then you can take the bolt off. Remember to use anti-seize when reinstalling.

Ah, I'll get out there with a light.
So the tool is just a straight rod? heck, I bet I could find some rod at a home improvement store and bend it.

Check out the photo in post #4. The long bend is just the handle, the short bend is the business end. Considering the torque I used to break mine loose, the tool you make needs to be sturdy. No real need for a flashlight, the holes will be between the bolts holding the pulley to the fan bracket. There are only two holes so as you probe between two bolts, if you don't find a hole, the gap to the next bolt will have a hole. There is a molded saddle (usually obscured by oil sludge) on the fan bracket at about 1-2 o'clock. This is where you sit the short bend of the tool. Then you lever the tool away from you as the short end goes in the hole.

home made tool
Hi All,
I had a stuck nut on my fan once. It may have been on a 300D though and not the 300 petrol. As far as I can remember I made a simple lever to hold the hub from mild steel, drilled 2 holes in it and used the fan nuts or threaded bar (cant remember) to go into the fan hub and hold it. Some nuts might have been used for spacing etc. I attach a drawing to the best of my memory. Might give someone some ideas. gerard |
