new to me 420SEL w/ issues
Bought this 86 420SEL for a couple hundred for the wheels and seat. Seller said the engine (199K) and transmission were shot. threw in a new battery, dumped some hi test gas into it, cranked and cranked and cranked. Hit it with starting fluid and it caught but wouldn't run. Took off the air cleaner and it starts. It starts as long as you don't touch the gas pedal. It starts at about 300 rpm, then settles to idle at about 1300 after warming up. when hot it performs well. He was right about the tranny as it won't move, but everything else works. So, what could it be that only allows the car to start with the air cleaner off? Since I am a diesel nut, I know little about fuel injected gassers. thanks for looking

That fuel system is dependant on HIGH fuel pressures. Any fuel system problem including sitting for a long time will mess that system up.
