88 300E exhaust manifolds

Has anyone ever restored their exhaust manifolds to new condition? Is there a coating that can be used or would it hinder heat dissipation?

Sure..I haven't done 300E manifolds, but a number of Benz manifolds.. I like Jet Hot coatings.if you want to Really cut down on temps have both the inner and outer surfaces covered.

Or, if you are on a budget and live in a reasonably dry environment you can always wrap them.

What does that mean...to wrap them? I live in sunny, wet, HOT South Florida and there is definitely a budget. I would just like to get the rust and uneven colors to look better.

I own a '86 300E and have asked the same questions about restoring the exhaust manifold. What I ended up doing is buying white high temp spray paint. The result was good and the paint is very inexpensive, a quick and easy solution. I did not remove the manifold, I carefully masked things off and it looks decent. Another option is jet hot but I don't think you can get it in white. One suggestion was to get the manifold ceramic coated in white but it is not a cheap option.

I'm talking performance via keeping the exhaust heat in the exhaust as opposed to your engine room.

Exhaust wrap is just that, google it up and you'll find out all about it. DEI is a common manufacture.

As for quick and dirty can't say I've ever delved into that..performance first, looks later IMHO.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not much of a performance buff, I just want it to look like it did when new, stock. Were the exhaust manifolds white when new? I thought that they would be gray or black, but I don't know. Do you think that the high heat paint holds up over time or mileage? Sounds like a fun small project.

If you want it to hold up Jet Hot is the way to go IMHO, they do white as per original. If you can make the exhaust more efficient why not?

Benefits are to be had on a few different levels.

I have yet to see a high temp DIY application that Really stands up long term.

I took mine to this small shop...

and they re-coated them with shiny silver sheen. It is NOT Jet Hotot but, the price was very inexpensive. This was a few years back and it is still holding pretty good...Do a search in the archives...I think the contact was listed back then...

I've used Eastwood's Stainless Steel High Temp Coating (10178Z). Works well but with any coating, you will have to remove the manifolds (easy to do on a M103) and sandblast them. This stuff brushes on and gives a final color and gloss of cast iron. The last can I bought was $24 for 16 fl oz.
I'd like to try ceramic coating a set of manifolds some day.

Thanks for the info, I contacted Jet-Hot and they do provide a flat white coating. The quote over the phone for a 300E is $225 with a one to two week turnaround. I asked for more info and planning to give a try. They have two locations, Mississippi and Pennsylvania. Their PA facility is close to me so I will save on shipping. I'll keep you all posted.
