190E Malfunction Unlocking Drivers Door
1. Problem: The driver's side door will not UNLOCK itself or actuate the central system using the key. When the key is turned, the window button tries to lift, but cannot. Nothing happens after that.
2. The drivers door operates properly to LOCK itself and operate the central system. 3. The door locks and unlocks itself and operates the central system when the "button" is pulled or pushed from the inside. 4. The drivers door locks and unlocks when a key is used in the passenger door or trunk. Replacing the door element did not fix the problem. Lubrication of the moving parts did not help. What would prevent just the UNLOCKING operation using the key on just that one door? Thank you for your help.

My problem was a broken "arm" that reaches from the lock tumbler into the door opening mechanism. To repair, the entire lock assembly must be replaced as a unit. This is a dealer-only part. They do a VIN# match to insure that the new lock works with your existing keys. Be prepared to bring proof of ownership and a picture ID.

As an alternative to Jim's solution, I purchased and installed a remote to lock and unlock the car. The kit was around $30 and took awhile to install, but was way cheaper than walking into the dealer's door and buying the proper part. I made the change about 2 years ago and it has worked flawlessly since then. This was on both the 190D 2.5 and the 190D turbo. In a pinch, you can still open the car with the key from the trunk lock. The only way to pin this problem down though is to remove the driver's door handle and you will see the arm that is broken. It will be obvious.
