power window stopped
1984 190D....
The driver's window has stopped and it's about 4" open.... I have tried swapping the switches and wires and the switch is good as the front switch will operate the rear window if the window harnesses are swapped under the shifter trim panel. All the fuses under the hood (left rear fuse panel) appear to be good. Is there another fuse panel on these cars? Also, none of the fuses under the hood appear to be marked so I'm not sure what is what. What is the more common failure item on these power windows? Motor failure, bad wire or ground, hidden fuse, broken wire where passing thru door jam? The passenger front works, driver rear works. Passenger rear did not work when I bought it and have not messed with it yet. Drivers window worked fine until yesterday. |
See if you have power to the motor with switch depressed. Common motor failure is usually the brushes and not a big deal to replace if your confident with that type of DIY.

sounds like I have to remove the door panel to continue any trouble shooting...
When I press the switch I can't really hear anything, not even a click that I can tell. Have I effectively eliminated the switch as a problem? |
I had issue with switch on my 380SE where pressing it did nothing. Sprayed some Radio Shack electronic cleaner into the toggle switch and now it works ok. Maybe a coincidence but for now a cheap fix.

I had that problem a few weeks ago on the drivers door. I opened the door, slammed it, and it worked again. It's been fine since. Try a couple door slams.
