I started my car a few weeks ago, this is on my c280, and my instrument panel was blank. Nothing would move or work, none of the gauges or lights. But the the temperature gauge still worked... anyways, i took it over to my mechanic (not a mercedes dealer) to have have a look at it. it was only a blown fuse. He put in a new one and the gauges worked and the miles were back on. but the miles hadn't registered during my drive to the mechanic (i know becuase i have a log book for driving miles that is a tax write off through my business). My mechanic told me that it seemed ok, but the computer in my car might have registered that the miles went haywire. He said that i should have it looked at by my mercedes dealer just to be safe! should i have it looked at? or is it no problem? Everything works and the miles are fine, but it didn't register the 20 miles to work. is that ok? or does the computer know TMU, True Mileage Unknown?

I don't know if the computer keeps a TMU code, but if you keep all your service receipts with the dates and mileage on them, (from before the speedometer repair until the time you sell the car) you should be able to verify during resale that it is only a small difference between the "true" mileage and the indicated miles. For example, if you have all your receipts from before the problem, and they show the last service was at, for example, 30,000 miles, and you then have a receipt for a Speedo fuse replacement at 31,000 miles, (and all subsequent receipts) that would do 2 things:
1)verify to a buyer your story about the mileage
2)verify that the mileage indicated is not much different than the "real" mileage.

With this logic you should also be able to convince your dealer to clear a stored TMU code if it exists and can be cleared from the computer.

I am in the same boat - my trip odometer died, and I drove about 70 miles without a speedometer while it was being repaired. I am not too worried about the true mileage in my case, because even a 1% error in speedometer accuracy from different size tires or tire wear would have already added or subtracted 800 miles from my odometer!

I thank you very much for your help. That is a good point regarding the receipts, I should have thought of that.

But that still concerns me that there could be a TMU in the computer? Anyone know for sure? If not, I won't have it taken in, otherwise I will, just to have it done and not worry about it.

I live in the Netherlands and overhere it is very common that people who drive a company C class or drive a C class as a cab/taxi disconnect the plug under the hood that comes from the left front wheel. When this (ABS)plug is disconnected, the car doesn't add any miles anymore (doesn't display speed either and the ABS doesn't function anymore).
The taxes that have to be paid in the Netherlands on a company car are very high and therefore some peolpe drive around with a disconnected plug a lot during private use...NO PROBLEM
