I bought a new rear bumper piece for my '95 e320 and need to know if anyone knows how to take it off. I can save some money if all the guys does is paint it. MOst of the cost is him installing it. I really don't want to break anything, so if you've done it I'd like to hear about it.

I just replaced my FRONT bumper cover last weekend on my '93 400E. Getting it off is a piece of cake -- 5 nuts to remove. The back bumper, as I recall, is similar. Once off, you can take off the black plastic impact strip, chrome, etc.

Incidentally, I painted mine myself. Went to an auto paint store, got 2 cans of bumper paint made by SEM, (in my case the color was dark titanium metallic which matched the original almost perfectly.)

5 nuts (13mm head) to be removed from the trunk (2 at each side under the taillights and one in the middle). After these nuts are removed, the bumper can be slide off to the rear (the sides are slide over a bumper guidance and the front of the bumper at the rear wheel well, needs to be hooked out of the wheel well.

After the bumper is removed, you can unscrew three phillips screws at each side of the bumper cover and start releasing all the bumpercover-clips from the inside while pulling at the outside...

good luck & greetingz,

Can anyone tell me how to do the same for my 190E?

My impact stripe has little white dots on it and they won't come off. I ordered the impact strip itself from the dealer and would like to align the rear bumper at the same time since it is just ever so slightly lopsided. I see there are four bolts from inside the trunk that attach the bumper to the body of the car but, I can also see two sets of two adjustment type bolts above and bellow the bumper on each side of the bolts that are found inside the trunk...

can anyone help me out with some info???

Thanks a lot !!!!

Mike,

4 bolts/nuts (don't know anymore since it depends on having a trailer hook and it has been a long time since I last removed one) with a 13mm head under the taillights. The sides of the bumper are aligned with 1 bolt each (10mm head) and these bolts are located behind a latch in the plastic trunk panels. No bolts or nuts in the middle of the bumper.
Once you have removed the rear bumper you have to get out 3 Phillips screws at each side of the impact strip after which the strip can be clamped out of the painted bumper shelf.

good luck & greetingz,
