87 190 Dt

I recently had the transmission rebuilt and the shop is telling me that I need to drive the car 500-1000 miles and then they can make any adjustments.

The problem that I am having is the transmission after completely warm doesn't seem to shift back into first until you press the accelerator which makes the car jerk taking off. The rebuilder says that there is a valve sticking and it needs to wear in.

In my opinion, after spending this much money it should be perfect from the beginning. Do I have something to worry about or should I give it time? I already have the 500 miles on it and it has only improved somewhat.

Its supposed to do that. It is designed that way to minimumize creep. The non Diesel cars start in 2nd gear unless you push pedal to floor or shift to low.
Shouldn't your rebuilder know this.

The reason for my concern is the vehicle wasn't shifting into first after press the accelerator before the rebuild. It always started in first. The reason for the rebuild was third gear was going out. Was there something wrong in the beginning? My model is a diesel.

Possibly it was working before but was so smooth you didn't notice it shifted into low when you pressed the accelerator because sometimes it is difficult to detect when it shifts into low. However, it shouldn't jerk so maybe it needs an adjustment. Give it a chance to break in.
