I was wondering if you guys thought I should replace thetiming chain when I do a valve job. It is inexpensive and thought maybe I should do it at the same time. My car has about 230,000 miles on it.

Based on what I have read if the oil has been changed properly there is no reason the chain could not go longer BUT if it was me doing it I would replace the chain and the guides. I have just always felt better replacing parts that I have created "access" to like this - especially if I do not know if they have ever been replaced or not.

Although I knew it was not necessary, I renewed the chiming chain on my 300SL-24 when I was at it (the head gasket needed renewal). The car has run approx. 68k miles and I am rather safe than sorry.
greetingz,

Rule of thumb
Brother of The Benz, Dave
With it's miles, you should make the chain ornimental. Try to replace all components that require minimal if any additional disassembling. Ofcourse there are exceptions to the rule. YES deffinately replace the chain, guides and tensioner and possibly the oil pressure regulator. Happy Trails Beep Beep from The Spiderman in Houston!!! |

This is a ratcheting tensioner engine. Unless the engine has not had frequent oil changes, you should not have to worry about it on a ratcheting tensioner engine.
That said, if it let's you sleep better, replace it. Have a great day, |
