2 things..
Make sure that the oxygen sensor is working & that the fuel mixture is adjusted correctly so that the system goes into closed loop.

Have you replaced the air filter? Also look for gunk in the intake,,, pieces of carbon create resistance to air flow which would richen the mixture (albeit a little)

They even make you do emissions testing on a car that old? Thats insane. No emissions tests or inspections in Michigan.

You can say that again. I bought my SEC in Washington State.(No sales tax. Drove it home and had to hand over $772 just to get it registered, which of coarse included a user tax.
I had a mechanic put in a newly rebuilt smog pump. The PO had disconnected the origonal one because of a bad bearing.

Engine seemed to run great. But I too failed at smog test. A test and repair station charged me another $125 to fine tune the air/fuel mix and bring down the RPMs a little. Only then did the car pass. Because of the H
hydrocarbons, the guy said I should look too change the cat before the next test. It's pretty tired he said.

Good luck

Trish
why are you going back without having it fixed? you
run the chance of being a gross polluter which will really
mess up yer day. go to a shop that knows mb's and get it fixed.
anything from a bad sp plug to a bad cat could fail it.
next time tell us what failed.

Try using some of that G.T.P. additive in the car. The stuff is amazing. They guarantee you to pass emissions with it, or supposedly, they pay for either your re-test, or repairs, or something like that.
G.T.P. by the way means Guaranteed To Pass...I've used it, and the stuff really worked well on my 87 F-150 with no Cats, or Oxygen sensors at all, and a mildly modified 302 in it. The truck failed by a long shot the first time through, so I dumped some of that into it, did nothing else, and ran it back through. I passed with flying colors the second time around, and only a few hours after the first time through. The guy at the Emissions station was kinda dumb-founded, to see it, and asked me what I did. I didn't know what to say, so I told him I had advanced the timing, and he smirked, and gave me my paperwork. Every auto parts store, and even Walmart stocks the stuff...Oe can in the tank, and drive it around a while, and run it through the test..
