What is the best (and easiest) way to remove the wheel bearing seals once the rotor is off the front of the car when you want to reuse the seals? Is there an easier way when you intend to replace them anyway? (W123)

I don't think you can re-use them, as they are pressed in and must be pried out.

Haynes describes this and it's pretty easy. If you are going to be a DIY'er, you should pick one of these up. You can find them at Pep Boys or any parts house.

To remove the seal once the rotor is off: Use a hammer and chisel to deform the seal. Then pry it off with a big screwdriver. Remove all the old grease. Grease the inside of the seal, place it over the opening and place a large(same size) socket over the seal and tap it into place.

We do not reuse them. If you do and it leaks, you will have to take it all of the way back apart...All for a $5 dollar part. Not to mention that if all of the grease comes out, it will ruin the bearings.

Thanks for the help

I have the Haynes manual and use the chisel method. I was thinking there may a "trick of the trade" more "finesseful" way that would involve a less harsh method than pounding and deforming the seal to get it out.

Thanks again.
