Mobil 1 5w40 ?

Need to change my '01 E430 oil so phoned local dealer looking for Mobil 1 0w40 which is the only oil the engine has ever seen. Parts guy told me MB switched to 5w40 (for any '98 or newer Benz) about 7 months ago and that's what they sell for $7.95/qt.

The only 5w40 oil I saw on Mobil 1's site is Delvac, which the guy assured me is not what they're selling.

I know the last thing this board needs is an oil thread so I'll delete it when someone with knowledge chimes in, but is this Mobil 1 5w40 exclusive to MB? (thus why it's nowhere to be found on Mobil 1's site?)

I appreciate any response. :D

You can buy the 0W40 at any wal-mart, so I'd just keep using it. The 5W40 I have seen is for diesels though I think I heard they started making a new one for gassers too...don't know what difference it makes but if you've been using the 0W40 all along why switch now? Save a couple of bucks a quart and buy it at W-M.

The 5W-40 Mobil 1 is ONLY required on the Bluetec Diesels starting in 2007.

BUT because most dealers don't want more than 2 types of oil, most switched to the 5W-40. AS far as I know no one else NEEDS that OIL yet.

The 0w-40 is still a valid oil for ANY other MB product.

Thanks DOC :)

nhdoc: My local WalMart didn't have the 0w40 that's why I phoned the dealer. I'll call a couple other WMs to see if they have some in stock.

Thanks for the replies !

use it

I let them change it now with the 5w40 229.51 spec oil for 4 reasons

1) if it's good enough to keep a CDI clean for 13k miles, it's good enough to scour my m111 every 7500

2) You CANT buy this oil in stores

3) it's the highest-spec MB oil yet

4) It's $5 a quart retail AT THE DEALER. I haven't found Mobil 1 that cheap at Walmart, let alone from the dealer.

I just started using the 5W40 diesel oil in my W210. Got it for a little over $5/quart at the local auto parts store. So far so good.

Cheers, John

I've seen M1 5w40 at Mcparts stores. It's branded "truck and SUV" or some such nonsense. From a quick scan of the label it appears to be pretty much Delvac 1 bottled in quarts. I'm planning to stick with 0w40 in both the M104 and M112 for now.

Clearing up confusion

The new 229.51 MB 5w40 IS NOT DELVAC 1, NOR IS IT "HEAVY DUTY TRUCK AND SUV"

Mobil 1 DID re-brand their Delvac 1 as "Heavy Duty Truck and SUV" oil, which is DIFFERENT than plain-old "Truck and SUV" (Standard Delvac 1300)

NEITHER OF THESE OILS IS THE NEW 229.51 5W40!!!!!!!!

The oil MB is using is an EXCLUSIVE oil

I'll let MBDOC back me up on this

^I've seen three synthetic Mobil oils at Walmart and other stores. I've seen the "Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W-30", the "Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40" and the "Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40"

Are you saying there is another Mobil 5W40 out there?

pmizell 06-15-2007 08:09 PM

Rode down to my local Autozone and saw the "Mobil 1 Turbo-Diesel" version of the 5w40 Yal mentioned above. Didn't see any MB specs on the label so I didn't buy it -- it was $6 a quart.

Dealer wanted $7.95 for this elusive 229 spec 5w40 Mobil 1.

Have a look here folks.
http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

The M-B specified oil is Mobil 1 ESP 5 W - 40.
Not to be confused with any other 5 w - 40.

This oil, according to the chart, is specified for 2007 + models.
Oddly enough, when I inqired at my local M-B dealer's parts counter, I was told they use it only on BlueTec Diesels, and anything else still gets filled with 0 W - 40.

I'm sure it's like someone said earlier - dealer dependent. Maybe they're getting a good deal on 0w40 so they continue to use it in gas cars. I know that MY dealer is using only the 5w40 now.
