I have read that it is possible to adjust valves on a 300D with regular wrenches but that it is a real pain. Has anyone tried crows-feet sockets? I'd like to find an alternative to the $65 wrenches.

Paying $65 for the wrenches is a bargain considering that they will pay for themselves the first time you use them. If you just can't pry your wallet open ;) then get a set of cheap metric wrenches and heat them up and form them to the likeness of the factory set.

I assume you're talking about a 123 300D. If so there is a valve near the back, I think it is the third one from the rear that is somewhere between extremely difficult and impossible without the wrenches. Even with the wrenches that one is tough. I bought my wrench set for less than $65 but it's been so long ago, I don't remember where.
The wrench set is worth the money though. My $0.02, |
I just got a set on ebay for $45. Search "mercedes valve" or "Mercedes wrench" Don't even think about trying to do the job without the factory type wrenches.
