C220 Belt Tensioning Pulley Removal

Anyone with access to a manual for a 1994 C220 (111 Engine)? Need to know if a special tool is necessary to remove the belt tensioning pulley for access to replace the belt damper. I don't have visual access to the vehicle at this writing, but I recall that it appears that the External Torx on the center shaft could be held with a socket while removing the retaining nut with a box end wrench. Anyone done this one?

I'm guesing it will be a 8mm hex on the tensioner.

Here is a detail http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=202022&M=111%2E961&GA=722%2E423&GM=717%2E417&CT=M&cat=19K&SID=20&SGR=045&SGN=03

You need an external (E10 I believe) torx socket to hold the stud while you loosen the collar bolt that is under the plastic cover. A closed end wrench (10 mm?) that has an angled head (so that it reaches inside the cavity) may be necessary. I have only tightened the collar nut, so I cannot tell you if there is something more difficult to get the pulley fully off.

I bought a set of E torx sockets at Pep Boys for $20. Nicer than the ones sold on Ebay at about the same price once shipping was factored in plus I didn't have to wait. You will want a good set of these for future repairs.

Please post your experiences taking this off. I will be interested to know if you were able to get the plastic cap back on that goes in the center of the pulley.

Thanks for the feedback. The tensioner shaft takes a #10 external torx and I have used that in the past just to move the tensioner in order to replace the belt. Looks like the retaining nut indeed may take a box end with significant offset. I don't recall seeing the plastic cover -- perhaps this one is missing? May be a while before I get to this one. Will report when I do.
