Can anyone provide the meaning of fault codes
9, 18, and 26. A friend has these codes showing
up after his mechanic replaced a module that
controls the AC in his '93 400E.

Thanks.
Forrest

That is JimF's website. That site should have the codes for what you are looking for. Good luck! :)

Fault Codes for M119

David, thanks for the reply. I checked Jim's site and
could not find a listing of fault codes. He does write
about a couple of sources for the code information though.

Reading, the key to success. . . .

Forrest,

The faults codes (called Diagnostic Trouble Codes; DTC) are contained in menu #5. These codes are stored in the DIAG MODULE (N59).

Since you weren't able to 'decipher' the page, here they are:

9 ---Intake Air Temperature sensor (IAT), open/short
18 --Adjustable camshaft timing solenoid, open/short circuit
26 --Upshift delay 1 to 2 (model 123.034) , 2 to 3 (all models)

They all 'point' to the LH-SFI module and need to test it. But, of course, it could be;
"9" -- a loose or bad IAT. It's located in the left side (drivers side) on the air intake hose.
"18" -- a bad camshaft solenoid; located on the header (each side)
"26" -- probably a bad vacuum line.

Hope this helps you.

Replace your intake Air Temp sensor-it's a $25 part, and takes about a minute to replace. It's the sensor installed in the plastic panel behind the left side headlight that routes air up toward the airbox...it's the piece you remove to re-aim the headlight.

These things are cheap and do go, so get it out of the way for starters. Good luck solving the other issues; sorry I can't help.

Fault Codes for M119

Jim,

Thanks for deciphering the page. I'll try your
web site again and will pay particular attention
to menu item (5).

Fault Codes for M119

Thanks to all for your feedback. The problem turned
out to be due to a faulty basic control module that
had been replaced to fix an inoperable AC.

Jim, your site has proven very useful to several
people and is respectfully referred to as the
"rosetta stone" of M119 tech info.

Regards,
Forrest

Glad it's fixed!

I had some problems with DTCs and was determined to fix it myself, thus the 'birth' of my page(s).

Glad it helped you too!

I still stand by my recommendation...perhaps it wasn't the issue this time (Go Jim!!), but they're cheap and do die frequently.

so what does the IAT sensor actually do for the performance of the car...
aside from turning on that light?

JimF 02-04-2003 06:57 PM

IAT sensor

The IAT is another 'semi-key' sensor that determines the air/fuel mixture to the engine.

This sensor reads the intake air temperature (thus IAT) and is mixed with the ECT sensor (and others) to obtain the correct fuel mixture to the engine based on the current engine temp and intake air temp. Very complicated these cars!

YOU'RE TELLIN ME
thanks jimF

do you know how this would affect the performance of a 300CE 24V?
could that contribute to poor gas mileage?

Haven't posted this yet . . .

because I'd like to get more data but . . . .

I recently changed my Mass Air Flow (MAF) [stevebfl calls it AMM] sensor. Why?? My gas mileage dropped abit and the dreaded DTC#19 registered in my car (CE light came on). Mileage around 14 mpg.

DTC#19= Bad injector(s) or car's self-adaptation (S/A) is at limit in the LH-SFI module.

This failure is common on most V8s between 92 to 95. It seems to occur around 100K+ miles. Have seen four (4) cars that registered DTC 19 with 90K to 106K miles. Mine came on at 103K.

The S/A is programmed by the eprom that's in the LH-SFI module (N3/1) [check my page, menu #1 and/or 2 for its location). The limits are 0.85 to 1.15 as I understand. When the CE lights, the S/A hits the lower limit of 0.85. The car is still running fine, so there's no problem. But since the mixture is a little rich, the car's lambda starts to drop. The system still corrects properly to maintain the correct air/fuel mixture (as close as possible) but you start to burn more gas in the process.

So I changed my MAF. Immediately lambda changed to the lean side. [Waiting for the S/A to recalculate so that's why I haven't posted this.] For example, the injector duration changed from 3.2 millesecs to 2.8millesecs. That means you using less gas for the same, and in my case, much better power even at low rpms (1500- 2000). My gas mileage has gone up: 16.2 mpg on the last fillup.

So will the IAT do the same thing? Don't know but I think that the MAIN determining element is the MAF and secondarily, the O2 sensor. The IAT would probably not be that important for your '90 300CE as far as gas milage is concerned. My opinion.

BTW, if anybody has the DTC#19 problem, send me email because it can fixed very easily at low cost.

thanks...btw....
love the s500 cpe...
which is my choice for my next mbz...
presently i've got the baby of the two...
