98 C280 Fuel Pump Replacement

I'm very new to working on MBs. I plan to replace my fuel pump, has a mean howl. Any thing that I need to know before I start, tips, or experiences? Where's the best place to go for a service/repair manual? Thanks!

Thanks!

26 reviews and no comments. Apparently it's an easy job. Thanks!?!

I have a Haynes manual for the european chassis C-classes, when I get home from work I'll take a look at the manual and see what info I can give you.

Also check out www.club202.com it may have info in the repair section.

Also be sure to use the search function here and The DIY ARTICLES at the top of all pages at this site.

I your new to MB are you familiar with mbworld.org or mbca.org. Also google STAR TUNED MAGAZINE or locate it at www.mbwholesaleparts.com

Here is what Chilton says and a diagram they provide:

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.

Disconnect the negative battery cable and properly relieve the fuel system pressure.

Remove or disconnect the following:

Intake, outlet and bypass lines. Plug the lines

Electrical leads

Fuel pump and vibration pads

To install:

NOTE
Some models utilize 2 fuel pumps connected in series.

Install or connect the following:

Fuel pump and vibration pads

Electrical leads

Intake, outlet and bypass lines. Torque the cap nuts and banjo bolts to 18–22 ft. lbs. (25–30 Nm).

My own general advise is be prepared for the spilled fuel and plug the lines as they say or you could have a lot of spilled fuel. If they are rubber lines you can try a golf tee maybe. I don't really know how to plug metal lines.

Mpolli gave an excellent reply, but I'll repeat but from the Haynes manual.

1) Fuel pump is adjacent to the fuel filter (underside of car)

battery disconnect - car cool

2) To relieve fuel pressure, remove briefly then refit fuel filter. Additionally a fuel pressure relief valve ( schrader type ) is fitted to front of fuel rail, another method is to remove fuel pump relay and crank engine for a few seconds. If your going to do the work respond back and type out the directions fully.

3) Remove pump plastic protective filter.

4) Use hose clamps.

5) Remove rear luggage compartment floor covering from inside the car, lift insulation for access to fuel pump wiring. Disconect wiring at connector. Prise rubber grommet and feed wiring through.

6) Posiiton container under fuel pump, disconnect fuel supply from fuel pump. If fitted disconnect ventilation hose.

7) There may be a non-return valve to be unscrewed from fuel pump outlet.

Be sure insulation sleeve is O.K.. pump must not touch mounting clamps otherwise corrosion can occur.

Plugging metal lines

I deal with hydraulics in heavy equipment. We use the foam ear plugs to plug a metal hydraulic line. Would imagine they would work in this case.
