Charcoal Canister in my Mercedes flooded with gasoline???!!!!!

:confused::dizzy2::confused:

Can anybody help me with this problem?

I have Mercedes E320 1998 v6. The problem started one night after I have filled the fuel tank. Next day; engine stops suddenly in the traffic, and while I'm driving seem that it will stop. At the beginning I thought it’s a problem with the fuel filter (already replaced 10 days ago). With computer check it has been found the following faults. p0450 (Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Malfunction) and other code that I don’t remember but they told me it’s the fuel level sensor.

With the tracing of the problem they found that there is leak from the vent fitted above Charcoal Canister and the Charcoal Canister flooded with gasoline. So the Charcoal Canister instead of supplying gasoline vapours to the engine it was supplying liquid gasoline.

After spill of the gasoline in the Charcoal Canister engine runs better, but after filling the fuel tank (3/4), problem reoccurred.

Can anybody help me with this problem?

Or any suggestion? Because I'm confused some people says it’s a problem in the Charcoal Canister (there is diaphragm inside it)

and another person says it’s the engine computer control ( which I don’t think)

Somewhat a common occurrence on 1996 & later cars with OBVR (on-board vapor recovery) systems. ON those models when the auto shut-off stops filling the tank DON'T try to top off the tank OR damage to that OBVR will happen.

Any suggestion on how to get rid of this problem

After the incidence of this problem

As I have mention before after emptying the charcoal canister the engine seems better running. But after filling the tank 3 quarter of the full level, within 5 km the problem occurs again.

This car is an American system and especially I'm living the Middle East, there is problem in finding this kind of parts. So if any body can suggest which parts exactly I might need to replace

many thanks

Start by replacing the damaged charcoal cannister.

One more thing I want to mention, that when I left the fuel tank cap open, the car runs without any problems. I have mention that there was a negative pressure inside the fuel tank.

is the any thing else I might need to check???

The purge valve may have been damaged by the raw fuel as well.
