S320 Trans slip reverse only
 

Hey guys...and ladies.
I have a 96 S320 and it goes like this. No trans problems at all...perfect as a matter of fact. Backed up a fair distance on the interstate to help someone in trouble I passed...did it at a pretty good clip...and since then i have had very hard shifts, delayed at the upshift, ...the transmission sometimes slips in reverse and when it does it leaks trans fluid at a pretty good pace. When it doesn't slip..no fluid..I adjusted the mudulator a little and the shifting is getting better but I can not figure out the intermitant slipping in reverse. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

does it just slip or if you raise the rpms far enough will it move but shudder?

Yes it will move...doesn't shudder..just begins to move with significant slipping. Curiously enough there is a fair amount of play in the shift lever...It was there before this event without any trouble. Maybe just a coincidence. Since I posted this thread I moved the shift lever around at the R on the trans shift assembly and it did go solidly into reverse. I can not figure out the fluid leaking and I have not yet been able to repeat the solid shift into reverse. Thanks fro your reply.

check the bushings on the shift lever rod that goes from where the lever sticks out of the bottom of the car to the left side of the trans.those things petrify and turn to powder based on time not mileage.

Hi David....Thanks for responding. I am replacing the bushings as well as servicing the transmission tomorrow. Can you reread the descriptions I wrote and coment about the fluid leaking only when I have it in reverse. Also I think the fluid on my car is MB synth, Is this clear. The authorized mercedes shop near me topped off the fluid while I was away on business with a red fluid. Is this correct. Thanks for any input you have.

i believe your car takes dextron not synthetic.where it leaks from is a tough one without seeing it.

I'll be under it tonight. Have the bushings(the shop says they are a pain to change on ramps) and doing a fluid and filter change. I'll try to see where the fluid is leaking then and post my observations. Thanks again for your help.

Trans spewing fluid in reverse
 

The fluid is comming from the bell housing and only in reverse. Put th trans in reverse..no noise...then a whine develops...then fluid pouring out...not dripping pouring....any suggestions....please.

might be the alloy bushing in the front of the trans right behind the front seal.when that moves it uncovers a hole and you loose pump pressure to the outside and of course no reverse gear.you will need a new front pump if this is the prob.this bushing supports the torque converter and when loose will move around.

I have reverse. It just dumps fluid.....sometimes.

Problem solved. Front seals blown, crack in the forward pump housing...replaced seals, pump housing...and new pump while there. .total tax tag and title. 812.00. Next question is the trans now has a delayed upshift. Waits too long. Tech cleared all prior codes and says to wait a week of driving for it to relearn but I would think the factory standard should have pretty normal shifting. Anyway this is the next issue in the saga.
