Name That Wrench Size
Can anybody tell me what size wrench/socket the oil-line connectors are on a 95 E320 wagon suspension valve?
11 is too loose, and 10 is too small. never seen a 10.5 wrench. plus it needs to be a slotted box end to get around the lines. I HORRIBLY stripped out the last valvebody (note to self: vice grips do NOT equal a box end wrench :D) and I don't wanna make the same mistake twice. |
Have you tried a 7/16" wrench ?
Btw., what you want is called a line-wrench. ;) |
I have no knowledge of your car and the situation makes no sense, but it is what it is I suppose.
Suggest you start going through your SAE collection(fractional sizes) and see what works. To Manny's point - line wrench - term used by techs - formal name is flare nut wrench. Sears has a good set for a reasonable price. Some of the McParts type auto parts store carry them in sets as well. I'd buy a metric set of course. The fittings that require flare nut/line wrenches are odd and this may be why you encountered the situation you have. |
is there a diff between LINE vs OPEN END wrench?

Yes, there is a difference. You should be familiar with an open-end wrench, and usually on the other end of that wrench is the corresponding sixed box-end wrench. A line-wrench or Flare-Fitting Wrench looks exactly like a 6-sided box-end wrench, with one of the sides cut out. What you have is a 5-sided "box" style wrench. The purpose of the wrench is to grip 5 of the 6 sides of hydraulic/pneumatic fittings. These are usually flare-style fittings and can be easily damaged with an open-end wrench (grips only 2 of the 6 sides of the flare nut). A box-end wrench is impossible to use since it cannot fit over the tubing. Mike Murell is right, Sears has a good, reasonably priced set. That's where I got my set. Finally, I do not know what size you need; only wanted to help explain the different wrenches. Good luck… And I think we *ALL* have made the same “note to self” to ourselves at one point or another! |
