I want to replace my shock absorbers.....car rides fine but they are old and I'm always looking for things to renew....

I have no manuals but am competent with tools. Can I do this job? I searched the archives but found no step by step explanation. Did read something about compressing the springs which sounds like a special tool type deal.

Anyone able to take me through this? Should I even try?

Thanks,

Nic

Pretty easy DIY job. Requires removing the rear seat, as that is where the top ends of the rear shocks live. Never done it on a coupe, but probably the same as a sedan. No spring compressor required. On mine the lower bolts on the front shock required kind of an unusual socket. If I remember right, it was a 10mm 12 point.

Thanks Palangi, with that reassurance, I think I'll give it a try.

IT is not a hard job, I just did mine on a 300d. It was not easy dealing with the backseat but it all came out ok. Be careful with the bolts in the rear as they are prone to breaking off. I soaked it in liquid wrench for a couple of days before i got around to doing the job. Just spray it when you get out of your car a couple of times. It helped my job. You should get the haines book at least it helps a little. Also take off the rubber boot of the front shocks and replace the bushings inside when replaceing the front shocks.
Finally i would suggest using blistien or boge shocks. THis job is alot of work and good parts are a must. I got my parts for about 225. The car drives so flat now its great. WHile you got the wheels of you may want to inspect your brake pads. They too are easy to put in.

Have fun

Back seat removal is probably the hardest part

Back seat removal is probably the hardest part of this job. The rest is cut and dry.

If you don't have a 10mm 12point socket, a 12 point box end will get the job done if you have a little extra time to spend. To make this easier, if you have a SAFE way to raise both front wheels in the air at the same time, then put the key in the ignition switch so that the steering wheel turns easily. Then turn the front wheels from one side to the other to allow easy access to the bottom front shock bolts.

Good luck,
