Is there any down side to replacing the timing chain tensioner without changing the chain? My 300TE 4m is making clicking noises after long shutdowns. I haven't chased it with the stethoscope yet, but it sounds like either a lifter pumping down or the tensioner. I have 214k miles and plan to do the head rebuild around 250k, so I am considering just replacing the tensioner now and running another 40k miles until the head pull and repalce the chain at that point.

I'm interested in any thoughts out there contrary to what I'm thinking.

Thanks.

No downside, but that is a spring loaded device. I would suspect a lifter is causing your ticking noise. Chain is short and doesn't stretch much. I've got 190K on mine and it's still quiet, even after having the head cut 12 thousandths.

Thanks, Jeff. I think it's probably the lifter also, but I am goiing to need a new tensioner anyway and thought this might be good insurance to keep the chain taught until I tear the head down.
