Steering Box

I need to change out the steering box on my 1983 300 SD. I have someone with a steering box out of a 1991 420 SEL that told me it would fit. I know they are both W126 models but one is Diesel and the other is Gas but, I don’t think that should matter. I am more concerned with the year difference. I just wanted to verify with the forum.

126-460-14-01 is the same steering gare box use on 91 420SEL

That means I can use it on my '83 SD. Great, he only wants $ 75 for it.

When you are replacing your steering box it may be a good idea to get at some other steering components nearby. There are several bushings on the sterring column that get old and dry and shrink that contribute to sloppy steering. This might be a goog time to replace them. Also a new steering damper would be a good move unless you have recently changed it. Just a few thoughts

Thanks Jason, I will have a look at them and see if I can get the parts from MB. I don't want to impose but can you give me a tip as to which one's to look for? I also got a "rebuild kit" from the fast lane before a mechanic said my box was shot. It is a bunch of "O" gaskets. Because I have it anyway, should I put them in the used box before I insall it? Or, leave well enough alone?
