Are you referring to the power steering cooler here?

Is that what those are? Didn't know that. But yes, the parallel set of lines that loop across the front of the fans and shroud.

I don't know how long the trip home was, but on a car like yours, you should see about 40' from the center vent.

Even in the mid-nineties with the dewpoint around 70, my '91 will become uncomfortably cold and I put the fan on low.

This is after you've driven long enough for the car to cool down and the compressor to begin to cycle on and off.

58 to 60 was way out of line. What else have you checked? Do you have any bubbles in the sight glass?

Even in the mid-nineties with the dewpoint around 70, my '91 daily driver will become uncomfortably cold and I put the fan on low. The trip is about 11 miles mixed.

Well, today was the test for my "experiment" and the results aren't as good as I had hoped but still slightly better than before shroud removal and condenser cleaning. Previous conditions had been moderate temps but today was mid to high 90's with bright sunshine and high humidity. My commute is 40 miles of nothing but highway and the best vent temp I could muster was 58.
No bubbles in the sight glass, pressures at idle last time I checked were IIRC 285/50 at about 75 ambient. (It is R-134a btw) All fans work good, vent temp at 75 ambient won't go below 46. Can't think of anything else.
I posted a lengthy thread on this but got it in OD by mistake and never got it moved or replied to.
Thanks for your input.

I had a 300E that had been converted to 134. The numbers you cite were about the best it would do, also.

Thanks for the instructions.

Getting just the shoud off doesn't sound too bad but one of my two fans does not run and I'm planning to remove it too. If I can't fix it I will leave the broken fan and shroud off because it appears to be more of a hinderance to airflow than a help.

The usual method I use to clean the radiator and condensor fins is to spray some Castrol Purple degreaser on the fins and then use a garden hose with spray handle to blast the bugs off from inside the engine compartment. You have to maneuver between the fan blades and it's a bit messy but I'm always amazed at how much crud comes out.

One of my fans had failed and all I had to do was clean the crud out of the back of it and now it runs perfectly.

And I say again, if your car is air conditioned you are making a mistake by leaving the fans and shroud off. Unless you drive ONLY on the highway and never stop.

Well, my a/c problems are mitigated for the time being. I converted back to R-12. I had several cans lying around and nothing else that takes the stuff so what better use? Indy did the job, breaking the fittings and flushing with methanol and changing back to the proper oil. It seems one of my problems was the green dye that someone had added to the system. Indy stated that the dye is carried in oil and to properly add dye, a corresponding amount of oil needs to be removed. He estimated that there was way too much oil in the system. A simple evac and R-134 charge might have cured it but no matter.
What matters now is that I have to turn the system waaaay down (toward warmer) or I freeze out of the car. I had a 400 mi round trip on Saturday in 90+ heat with near 100 heat index and it was blowing 42 deg. air with no degradation in performance over the day. Engine temps are very slightly elevated around town but it stands to reason if more heat is removed from the cabin it's being introduced to the air stream ahead of the radiator and could result in higher temps there. Temps on highway were fine.
Thanks to all for the input. I'll keep tabs on the results long-term but for now I'm a happy boy.
Chuck.

My 1990 300CE was shroudless when I got it 3 1/2 years ago and it always ran a little hotter than my 1992 300TE 4MATIC which has the shroud. I recently installed a new shroud in the CE and I have noticed it runs about a needle's width cooler at all times (so far up to 98F outdoors) and the a/c is a little cooler and cools the car a little faster.

One week later...

Still cool; still happy. Temps here have been pretty bad-105 with HI of 115. (Come on, Fall!!) A/C works great on highway, decent in town. Spent a lot of time last Fri idling and putting around town to Dr appointments with sick friend in car and it stayed pretty comfortable and got slightly over 100C on the temp gauge only one time.
