My 1983 W126 (280SEL) always experiences a hard jerk whenever there is a gear upshift and downshift, especially for the 2nd-3rd and 4th-5th gears. It also takes a while for the reverse gear to engage after shifting the gear shift knob.

According to my mechanic, my only option is an autotrans overhaul, which will set me back by about USD$1200.

Now my question is, could there be cheaper alternatives replacing only certain neccessary parts? (instead of stripping the entire autotrans in an overhaul) I've not much cash at the moment, and USD$1200 seems rather steep.

Would appreciate all advice, thanks!

There is no 5th gear!

There is no 5th gear so that is why you didn't get a reply to your post!

replacing the transmission vacuum modulator smoothed out shifts on my 126 .Check for leaky vacuum leaks at pipe ends as well.

Use a German trans rebuilder,do not use a Nation wide chain
Most trasmissions jerk if vac line falls off.
