I just put Mobil 1 gear oil in the manual transmission on my 240D. Then I noticed that owners manual says to use motor oil instead. Should I take the Mobil out are is it OK. Someone told me the Mobil was too slippery and would damage the syncros. I would think that there would be warnings on the label of the oil bottle if this were a big problem.

The 5 speed trans on my old '76 Honda Civic used motor oil, and Honda told me it was OK to use Mobile 1, but my synchro's were gone before the warranty was up, and they were not real happy about repairing them. I don't know if it was the Mobile 1, though, because I heard a lot of people had problems with '76 Honda synchros. I used Mobile 1 in the engine as well, and it made it out of warranty before it needed a ring and valve job, the Honda area rep had to referee that one.

I put Mobil One engine oil, I don't remember what weight, in my '84 Euro 240D manual 4 speed at about 300,000 miles. I have yet to change it, and the car now has 550,000 miles and the transmission is still as good as new. The gear oil is too thick and will build a bit of heat in the summer, and be difficult to shift while cold in the winter.
Good luck, |
