What is the best code reader/scanner for MB?

I'm looking to buy a code reader/scanner for MB and most of the cars. Please don't laugh on me but I need the best one that covers most of the cars/ and areas including the erase of the codes. Thank you :)

Note: Not only for my cars. Let me say for a workshop

I second your question...
If I may add, given your profile, the ideal reply would be the one addressing OBD-II and pre OBD-II.
Specifically, in my case, I have a C280 1997 without OBD-II. (I have the 38 pin connector inside the engine compartment)

Arguably the best scanner for the money is one of the Carsoft-type PC interfaces sold on eBay for $100-$350. The best scanner system bar none is Mercedes' own Star Diagnosis System at a cost of over $20,000.

I'm not a scanner guru, but if you're talking OBD-II, there are 5 different levels of OBD-II. Google the issue and you'll find the 5. One is for GM, one for Ford, a couple of "ISO...." and CAN - used a lot by Toyota and maybe others Asian mfgs. The Asian mfg. also use the 2 "ISO....".

Also be aware that these OBD-II scanners are useful for a given number of systems on your car. You would need proprietary scanners for things like ABS. There are others.

Last but not least is the forth-coming "Big Brother" - OBD-III - used in 2008 models and those that follow until OBD-IV or whatever they'll name that one.

If I were you, I'd scrap the scanner plans and get after the PhD.

Just my 2 cents.

So which brand do you recommend?

I read in this forum about a scanner the covers almost every car but I can't find this thread, it was a link but I don't know to which site. Can anyone help me?

I just bought an Actron CP9190. It's OBD II, plus OBD I for most American cars. It cost $270. It will erase the codes and reset the check engine light. I'm happy with it. It works fine with my '95 S320. I hope this helps.

Thank you Glide Ride but this is not the one.

And last, but not least, I would read what Steve Brotherton has to say in this thread before plunking down $$$ on any gadget.

You probably refer to the Launch X431: http://www.x431usa.com/intro.htm.
