I always thought that these were jack supports? I found out the other day when I was removing my wheel that it can't be... that it actually comes out like the jack support! Can anyone tell me what it is? Thanks!

Those are lift points of the car. That middle part shouldn't be sticking out like that unless you are trying to replace the mount. Push it back in.

I pulled it out when I was trying to figure out what it was.
NOw, as I thought, they are lift points of the car... but, what mount would you replace by taking it out?

So I am correct in saying that I can place a jack under that to lift the car? THat's what I always thought it was until I realized it seemed only plastic and wasn't sure if it was made for that.

The mount that I am talking about is the round part. It's a combination of rubber and plastic. Anyway, I've changed a few do to excessive damage caused by a jack. It's a good idea to put a piece of wood between jack and lift mount.
The pin that you took out is for the removal of mount. The body of the car has a hole in which the mount plugs in. As you push the pin in, it spreads the "anchors" and holds it firmly in place. Similar to those small gray clips that you find all over the car (ex. trunk panel clips).

Oh, ok, duh, I see now.
How often do they brake? Will it hold a corner of my car without problem? Oh nevermind, I don't care, it's obviously ok and easy to replace if it breaks.

It will never brake under load. It's just that the metal part of the jack "cup" wears it down over time. They'll last forever if you use a piece of wood when lifting the car.

These very nice jack supports only get ripped off when driving over speed bumps with a lowered car! These jack supports are able to wreck the (model 97 or AMG) skirts without any trouble.
I changed my W202 jack supports for W201 jack supports that aren't even half as thick.
