1993 190E How to remove ign tumbler assy
Hello All:
Nice forum - my first post! The ign key will not turn at times. We have been spraying it with cleaners and lubes to get a few extra days use BUT we are on our last few turns. My guess is that the lock/tumbler assembly is worn out. My problem / guestions are:

I do not have the shop manual in front of me at the moment but IIRC the holes are for two wires to go into. You turn the key a bit and stick to ridgid wires into the holes and the ignition will come out.
If no one post here by the time I get home tonight I will look it up and post here later. |

Correction: This is a 1992 NOT a 1993 109E
We turned the key just a bit and incerted 2 7/64 allen wrenches into the two holes about 2 inches. Have pushed and wiggled them BUT.... the ign tumbler just will not come out. Question: Once you have something pushed into the holes - do you turn the key and pull or just pull without turning? I have pulled many tumblers in the past, this one is a PAIN! Thanks, Bob |
Tumbler Removal
As long as you can still turn the key you should not have a problem removing the tumblers. I used a wire coat hanger shaped in a "u" with the legs about 4" long. you then need to bevel the ends to a sharp point with a file. I can't remember if the bevel goes on the outside or inside of the points.
Turn the key to position II, push the tool into the two holes, it should go in 3" or so until it releases the spring clips that hold the tumbler in. Now just pull the key out complete with tumbler. |
