W124 Huge Rattle in/around gear selector

When I take left turns at anything other than a snails pace, I have a horrible rattle somewhere from around the gear selector, I can't see anything down there, but sounds like a nut is floating around. Car is a 1990 300e, that has had it's transmission replaced around 15000 kms ago. Car runs and shifts fine, but noise is driving me crazy.

maybe they didn't replace trans mount--sometimes called the 3rd engine mount.

Shifter bushings? Is the shifter nice and tight, or does it have fore-and-aft play?

Well I doubt it's the mount, unless it's come loose, as it was fine up until about 1000kms ago. But it seems very obvious to be at the top of the transmission or just below what I can see around the shift lever. Shifting seems pretty tight, but not requiring huge amount of effort to get into any gear.

I am currently searching for info regarding a "noise from the shifter area".
87 W124 300TD.
once I shift into Drive and start to take of, it makes noise like clunka clunka clunka clink clink CHUNK, then its gone. Like something is out of place, then pops back into proper position. My W210 is starting to do this intermittently on a much milder scale.

Admittedly the shift linkage could use a rebuild as it feels 'worn'.

My other concern is that while accelerating, the trans will upshift, then it either slips or down shifts, then up shifts again. This seems inefficient and wrong to me.

I have not changed the trans fluid since taking possession in April. Is there anything in particular I need to know about servicing the trans?

Thanks for the help.

Mine was a little plastic shifter bushing that melts off due to the heat from the engine and exhaust. It would rattle real bad on turns and pop out of gear. I replaced it and hasn't happened since. Easy fix.
