Which tie-rod? The "green" one?
 

I need to replace the tie-rod assembly on my 1987 W124 300E sedan. It's the drivers side green one. I assume there is only the one. Do I need to worry about left or right thread? Does the green paint signify appropriate threading?

I'll be attempting the DIY for this job with limited tools. Perhaps I may be able to pay for use of someones lift and then I'll replace a pair of bushings in the back as well.

Pretty sure the paint was only a " Code ", during the assembly of the car.
Before you take it apart, measure the exact distance from end to end, on the old tierod.
This will ensure, that your wheel is pointing the same as before.
To be absolutely sure, you may want to consider an alignment after.
Ordinary handtools should allow you to do the job.
Really don't need a hoist for this.
Jack & a jackstand should do it. ;)

You will need to purchase the left tie rod assembly. I've replaced both sides before and used a jack and jack stands. You will also need a tie rod removal tool, the shaft is tapered and can be very tight to remove.

Well I went and did the wrong thing. I took the car out the day before replacing the end link. Both ends of the assembly have given out. Was driving on Sunset Blvd. and heard/felt it go. I had trouble slowing the car down. LOTS of shimmy. Pulled off Sunset and got into a parking spot. I'm going back in the early AM to drive 1 mile downhill at no more than 5 miles per hour to a Mercedes only shop. It's a big shop and they will be open at 7. I dont think it will cost much to just change out the tie-rod assembly. Had wanted to do this myself. Just to get back to working on my own car. If it feels like the car is not cooperating I'll pull over and just call triple A for a free tow to the shop.

PS Maybe I'll get a quote on the two bearings/rods/arms I need in the rear suspension. The diff mounts could use a change out also.
