Whats' the thing under hood (W210) near cowl w/6-8 vacuum hoses?

Whats' the rectangular thing in its own little compartment on the passenger side near the fender & cowl, with 6-8 hard plastic vacuum hoses of various colors on it? Looks like a metering valve or some kind of maninfold/control unit.
