how to tow a 126
 

Posted this in another forum already but, I'm going to pick up my latest purchase this weekend, 1985 500SEC. It runs and drives but is about a 4 hour drive from me. To be prepared, just in case, should I take my tow bar, rent a tow dolly, or borrow a car trailer. Can the car be towed with the transmission in nuetral? or would I be better off with the trailer? Here's a picture of it, don't think $1200 was a bad deal?

lift the rear wheels off the ground as there is aux pump in trans[used for tow starting].

best thing to use is a car trailer.
 

I would use a full trailer instead of a dolly. If you do use a dolly, remove the drive shaft as the rear pump on the transmission will cause it to overheat.

Thanks for the replies, I'll just take the trailer and drive it when I get home to make sure everything is OK.

That is one of the cheapest prices I have ever seen one going for; if it's in decent condition, that was a real bargain..

Trailer it. Unless you remove the drive shaft you cannot tow a W126 for any distence or at any speed.

It says in the manual but the limit is only a few miles at less than 30mph.

The one time I had my car towed, it was in a busy intersection and the guy hooked it up with the rear wheels on the ground. But then when we got to the first parking lot, he stopped, unhooked and rehitched the car, and brought it home the rest of the way with the rear wheels raised. I'm glad he knew his stuff and that he cared enough to do that!

Found it on e-bay and it was near my folks so my dad went and checked it out for me. Everything I asked him to check out was OK. His main comment was that it needs a good cleaning and detailing job. :)
