w140 driver's door assist problem
My uncle has a problem with his drivers door assist on his early ('92) 500SE 140 series. The soft closure on all of the other doors and the boot work. The drivers door only works for a little while if you remove the fuse in the boot, wait for a few seconds and then replace it. Where is the problem? With the unit in the door or the central pump? Cheers

The failure of one or more self-closing mechanisms is the typical call for a pump who is beginning to fail.
From my own experience and for what I've seen on many other W140s, usually is the driver's door (many times along with the trunk -on post 1995 models-) who starts giving you trouble. Reseting fuse #9 cures the problem only momentarily. At first it will cure it for a few times, but as time passes by, it will fail faster and faster. At this point, other doors should begin to fail too. Also from personal experience, I can give you a few pointers after installing your new pump to extended its life: 1/- Don't ever slam your doors!!!, always allow the self-closing mechanism to operate!!! 2/- If you are going to have your car detailed (or any instances where you are going to leave the doors open for an extended perior of time) always take out fuse #9 and replace it once the job have been finished and all doors are closed. 3/ If you close your door and forgot something and want to open it again: always allow from 5 to 6 seconds for the self-closing mechanism to operate its safety mode to realease and then open the door! * * The safety feature on self-closing operates like this: when you close the door or the trunk, the mechanism will close the door FURTHER that its standard closing point, hold it there for 5 to 6 seconds and then releases it softly (allowing to rest the door on its normal close position). You may observe by closing the door softly, then see how the self-closing pulls the door further in than necessary, holds it there, and then releases it to rest. Its just a few tenths of an inch, but it is noticeable (especially from outside). Hope the info helps.
