We are getting ready to place a limited-slip differential (LSD) from a 190E 2.3-16v EURO into our W124 wagon with the C36 engine (270HP; 276 torque) and I was wondering which gear lube weight to use 80W/90 or 80W/140 (SWEPCO 201 with LSD modifiers)?

I have heard that in differentials that get hard abuse and without an external cooler or cooling-fins like the 400E/500E, one may want a wider range lube.

Opinions? Insight? Caveats?

The heavier oil would be better! THAT rear end isn't strong enough to take that much torque! The cars with that engine have a 198MM ring gear, the 16V has a 185MM ring gear.

Do you know of any 3.07 LSD that will fit a 300TE chassis (W124.090) and be able to take the torque?

Can the bigger ring gear even fit in the case?

I am currently using the stock C36 differential (2.87) and it fits perfectly. Does it have the bigger ring gear or is it just beefed-up?
