Cylinder 6 Misfire Read - 2000 280c sport

Hi! I'm new here. I was driving my car the other day and was at a stop light when it started to idle very low and my CEL came on. I took it to AutoZone to put on their machine and it gave a cylinder 6 misfire reading. After doing some research online I found that it's probably the spark plugs and/or ignition coils.

My question - is it okay if I just replace the one spark plug and iginition coils? And, what is the average cost for a non-dealer garage to do the repairs?

I plan on getting rid of this car soon as it's been giving me some problems....though minor, the costs to repair are not minor. Just had the belt and compressor replaced for $1700. It has 86K plus miles...could probably go for a lot longer but I don't exactly work on cars.

Thanks for any input.

Patricia

The spark plugs should last 100K miles, so I would have the #6 cylinder spark plugs (there are two per cylinder) closely inspected to see how they look to help ID the problem.

You could just replace the two with the same type if it solves the prob. But as a responsible current owner, most recommend replacing all as a set so the next owner won't have to change out 10 spark plugs in another 15K miles (think about how you would feel if someone did this to car before you just bought it). Showing that you had all 12 replaced would be a good selling point and showed you cared as well.

The plugs are hard to get to on the V6 (at least in the w202 C-class), so expect additional labor cost (over a straight six, or a car that has more room to get to the plugs) if you're paying someone to change them.

Thanks Mark. I'm getting the two replaced now and will get the others replaced very soon. I'm going on a long awaited vacation and want to spend my money pampering myself first. : )

But, I will definitely get the others replaced soon. Thanks again.

Update - Replace Computer on 2000 C280

I took my car into a shop because the idle starting running low. Took it to AutoZone first and a cylinder 6 misfire read registered. I had it at the shop for over a week because they were unable to find the problem. They said they had replace all of the spark plugs and wires and was still running badly. They finally concluded that it was the "computer" in my car that is the problem. And said it would be approx. $1700+ to repair. But he could possible put in a used "computer" for half.

Has anyone else had this computer problem? I'm considering having them put the used part. Thanks so much.
