Friday night i went to pull the lever inside my car ('85 190e)that releases the hood and nothing happened. There was no tension on the lever and it went all the way back without popping the hood. I took out the screw that holds the lever in place and saw a large black cable with a smaller silver cord inside. I pulled the silver cord thinking thats what would pop the hood. Nothing happened and now i have 2 feet of extra silver cord out. I priced a new cable on the fastlane here for $15. Is that all i will need to get my hood open again? Does anyone know how exactly to replace the cable?
thanks
doug

Yep, that is probably all you need. If the release itself were broken, you wouldn't have been able to pull out the inner cable.
As soon as you have opened the hood (with the help of a flat screw driver, a flashlight and some luck) you can easily rerun the new cable after you took out the old one.
The inner (silver) and outer (black) cable comes as one piece with the joints at beginning and end to attach to the hood-release parts.
